- Manage your time effectively. The mark allocation suggests that you should spend 80% of your time on Questions 1 and 3. (40 minutes on each). ALso remember to do Q3, then Q1 then Q2 lastly.

- It is vital to show detailed knowledge of the text in your answer to Question 1. This means basing your own ideas on ideas and deatils from the text (= inference). You need to use your own words and not simply rephrase the passage.

- In Question 2, make sure that you select words and phrases from the paragraphs you are asked to take them from and that you explain their effect on the reader and how this is created. Identify word choice and imagery. For word choice, what are the suggestions of the word (give at least 3), for Imagery, use the Just as...so formula to tease out the qualities of the image and then transfer these to the subject of the sentence.
